Wk 14 Classmate Conversation Group- Julia Clouse and Milton Coreas

FullSizeRender (6)IMG_3070

I met Julia the first day of class and I thought she was an amazing person. Let me tell you something about Julia, there is never a dull moment with her. She is a very funny and sweet girl.  She is a second year at Cal State Long Beach and majoring in Health Care Administration. She was doing Nursing at first but the major was very difficult to keep up with so she decided to switch.  She has big plans for herself.  Julia is the person I know and I must admit she is the best.

I met Milton later on that day. I realized I had him for my history class. Milton likes to play soccer and is a soccer fan like most guys. He goes for Barcelona and his favorite players Messi and Iniesta. His current hobby is the guitar because he is determined to learn how to play the guitar well and learn how to play many songs. I found out that Milton’s parents are from D.F, Mexico which is pretty cool because my mom is from Mexico too but a different part. I found out that he is one of the ex roommates from some of my close guy friends.  It was pretty nice to actually get to know him.

The question of the week was about how art has impacted our lives. I feel like I can see the world in a different perspective. I like how I get to think critically better. Milton and Julia agreed with me. They think it has happened them to become more creative a a person.

Wk 14- Artist Conversation-Makaila Palmer

This week I had the opportunity to meet Makaila Palmer whom is a lovely person with exquisite artwork. At the age of six, she began to discover her passion for art. She is now pursuing her art as a BFA  student at California State University Long Beach.  She is in her sixth year. She went abroad to Italy in her second year and she said it was the most beautiful and influential experience of her life. She was extremely inspired by Michael Angelo’s work she saw, which lead her to the decision of sharing her life.

Three of the four pieces were shown, for she is in the process of finishing the fourth, all of which are oil paintings on canvas. She titled them “Dawn”, “Day”, “Dusk”, and “Night”, each of which are all representations of different stages of her life. They all consist of a path, which is the path of life one takes to discover who they are and where they want to go. “Dawn” is a representation of her adolescent years. There is a path but you do not know what you are are doing until you figure out what you are doing.  “Day” focuses on Palmer’s college experience, specifically at the ages of 18 and 19. This painting is from the perspective of being on the path, for you are in the midst of discovering yourself and your potential life plan, with the mountains, or your future, in the distance but not clearly laid out, for you are not sure exactly where you are going. Her final piece called “Night”, although not finished, represents her reflection about her experiences, and who she has become now.

I think her posts are very beautiful and detailed. She began drawing her series but with advice , she changed her “path” to painting. The first thing she drew was a flower and now her drawings have evolved drastically.

You can see more of her work and learn more about her at: MakailaPalmer.com.

Wk 13 – Artist Conversation- Tyler Turett

IMG_0287img_7841

This week I had the opportunity to meet the artist Tyler Turett.  His gallery is located in the Max L. Gatov East. Tyler is from Huntington Beach and this is his last year at Cal State Long Beach whom is majoring in animation. Tyler likes using Photoshop for all of his illustrations, much of which he created at his job. He uses a Tablet to draw everything out. His inspiration for this gallery came from old cartoons that he used to watch as a kid.  Art has been his passion since he was a kid.Tyler is currently working on a new animated TV show on Comedy Central called Jeff and Some Aliens. Tyler works for a studio called Shadow Machine and would like to stay there for the next few years and eventually move on to something better. Tyler said that he really enjoys shows that can test people’s ability on television. Tyler’s favorite Disney movie would probably be Toy Story.

The process to create an animation can become very tedious because there has been a time where he had to redraw a character 20 times. I can only imagine how annoying that is. He tries to draw something new every time because he wants to see what he is capable of. His artworks were very creative because he had aliens and animals portraying human’s actions. Overall, his artwork was pretty interesting and beautiful. At some point, the drawings made me think about my childhood. Personally, the frogs in his artwork brought back many memories for myself. I recommend you to actually sit down and look at his artwork.

Wk 13- Classmate Conversation – Jennifer Palacios

This week I had the opportunity to meet Jennifer Palacios.  Here’s a little about her. Jennifer Palacios is 18 years old turning 19 this Monday November 23. She is a sophomore majoring in criminal justice trying to go into criminal investigator. She has two dogs named coco and Chloé. They’re basically her children, they mean a lot to her. She enjoys reading when she has the chance to. You can say she has her own library because she has so many books, which she got yet to read but haven’t found the time to.  She don’t necessarily have a favorite author but She really enjoys Rainbow Rowell’s work. The types of books she normally reads are more young adult contemporaries. She loves going to Disneyland and anything Disneyland related. She is an annual pass holder and she tries going as much as possible, normally she goes at least twice a month! She is not that great at drawing, she considers herself average. She normally likes drawing Disney stuff and mandalas. She is a shy person at first, but once she gets to know someone she is very open. She currently works for a company named Kate Spade in Citadel. She watches a lot of Netflix! She enjoys shows like friends, American horror story, criminal minds, parks and rec., the following, and stuff like that. She absolutely LOVE all of Tim burtons work!  She thinks he’s simply amazing at what he does. She  would one day like to travel around the work, the first place she  would like to visit is the UK. She doesnt  really travel by herself but the farthest place she has ever been to is Georgia. She hates the sun/hot weather! She prefers the cold weather! She loves fall/winter and her favorite holiday would be Christmas. For the question of the week, she said that art is an essential part of her life now. She is actually interested and sees the beauty of art.

Wk 12 – Classmate Conversation- Stefany Rodriguez

img_0551

This week I had the opportunity to talk to Stefany Rodriguez! I actually met her through out her sister Jennifer Rodriguez Aka China. They actually look very similar and at one point in the class, I thought they were the same person. They both are very nice girls. Well, her name is Stefany Rodriguez and she is a second year at Cal State Long Beach. She is a criminal justice major which is pretty cool considering that at one point I was a criminal justice major as well. She has a 1 older sister and 1 younger brother. They both live on the North side of Long Beach. Stefany works as a life guard at the CSULB competition pool. She said that working as a lifeguard is not that easy because other people’s lives depend on you and some people underestimate lifeguards and call us lazy because we sit on the lifeguard chair. It makes sense why she would get a job as a lifeguard because swimming is one of her hobbies. Water polo is one of her hobbies as well. She is part of the water polo club on campus. She is a very interactive person because she is very outgoing and has a free spirit. It encourages me to become more out there and joining clubs like her. She was telling me that she recommends me to join clubs because I will find people with a lot of similarities as me and it just makes the college experience better. She loves going to the gym and lifting, walking her dog, and she loves shopping. Every girl must love shopping so I can relate with her there. I enjoy working out as well and maybe we can go to the gym one of these days. One fun fact is that she dislocated her shoulder more than 5 times due to her playing water polo. I can only imagine how painful that is. She dislocated her ankle 3 times and her knees once because of soccer. Ironically, all her body parts were on the left side. I can tell that she is an athletic girl.

The question of the week was, “what color soothes you and what color aggravates you?” Stefany said, “Blue and green calms her because they are nature colors and red aggravates her because it seems evil”.

Wk 12 – Activity – Eportfolio

IMG_0259

This week’s activity is actually quite interesting. We have the chance to change the theme of the website but I felt like I did not need to. The reason why is because I feel like I have portrayed who I am throughout the website. I think the only thing that I would change would be the fact that I could of personalized my website. In other words, I want to make it more unique. I want to show the world my writing skills. I want to see if I still have the facility to write poems about nature and just life. When I used to be younger, there would not be a day where I did not write a poem. I want to start writing poems again and post them on my website. I want to receive people’s feedback on my work. If I had the chance to be a poet, I might even consider it. Poems make me release some sort of stress and relieves me. I think if my poems can make me feel a bit happier than why not share with the world as well. My goal would be to show the world that I actually have an artistic side of me.

Wk 12- Artist Conversation – Christopher Linquata

art gallery pic 1

This week I had the opportunity to meet Christopher Linquata who prefers to called Christo. I thought it was very awesome how both are names are similar because my name is Christa, the only exception is the “a” at the end. Christo collaborated ideas with Mike and together they created show named “Sacred & Profane”. Christopher’s art is displayed in the Max L. Gatov Gallery West. Christo is in his last year of the masters program at Cal State Long Beach. He is a representational drawing/painting major. Before uptaking the challenge of entering the masters program, he was teaching other art to others. He realized he needed a further education in order to become a better teacher and artist.

Once you walk into the art gallery, the art set up is very intriguing. There are four large paintings hung on the walls, while there are three small painted panels are laid on a shelf. Each background includes a beach with ruins in it. Another thing I noticed was that the faces were very similar and it even included Christopher’s own face. I was very intrigued and wanted to know the story behind it. There was some specific actions in some paintings. His acrylic paintings were based off scared and religious scenes. Generally, he paints theological scenes and he used to be a religious icon major. Each painting is either based on a classical or religious scene.  One of the paintings represent a version of Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane, with Christopher portraying Jesus. Another painting is when Hercules was killed by his father again with the artist being the main character. Another sort of inspiration for Christopher is nature and the artist Piero Della Francesca. The three panels he painted of himself, son, and wife were actually references to Francesca. The locations are actually the ruins of San Pedro. It took Christopher ten months to complete all his paintings. Personally, I enjoyed his art pieces! I found it interesting how he made modern versions of classical and religious scenes.

Wk 11- Classmate Conversation – Mark Flores

On Thursday, I was by myself just looking at the art gallery when one of Mark’s friends approaches me to ask me if I had talked to a classmate yet. He introduced me to Mark. I realized that I had Mark in my Criminal Justice class last year. I remembered him as the guy who got shot at Texas because he shared that during class. Well his full name is Mark Flores. He is originally from East Los Angeles but he has lived in several places. As a baby, he lived in East L.A and then he moved to Lancaster for 7 years up until he was 10 years old. After Lancaster, He lived in Houston, Texas for 2 years and then he moved to Guadalajara, Mexico for another 2 years. Finally he moved back to California and he has been here for 5 years now. He currently lives in Newport Beach.

He is 20 years old and he is a second year like me except I am 19 years old. He has played baseball since he was 4 years old all the way up to his junior year in high school. His current hobby is boxing and he has been doing it for 7 months now and he plans to fight in the amateurs soon. He works as a server at a cafe in Newport almost full time and he is a full time student as well. He has a girlfriend who he has been with for 2 years and a half. Fun fact: she is from England. Mark is Hispanic. His mom is Spanish from Spain and his dad is Mexican-American from L.A. He has made the deans list for both semesters so far and he enjoys school and learning new things very much. He is a criminal justice major who hopes to become a law enforcement officer in City of Newport Beach or surrounding cities. He would either like to be a city cop or a CHP ( California Highway Patrol). If for some reason he does not like law enforcement or it does not work out, his backup plan is to go to law school and hopefully become a lawyer. It was really nice actually meeting Mark since I knew who he was from last year. Mark believes that tattoo is art only when when there is true meaning behind it. He feels like a lot of people get tattoos as an attempt at being cool, or looking cool. He thinks that it is fine as well and that means it comes down to personal preference. If his career choice was not affected by having tattoos on his body, then he most likely get tattoos.

Wk 11- Artist Conversation- Kathy Yoon

FullSizeRender (11) FullSizeRender (12) IMG_0172FullSizeRender (14)

This week on Thursday I had the chance to meet Kathy Yoon in the Maxine Merlino Gallery. As I was walking inside her gallery, I could not help but stare at the beautiful creations.  They are very breathtaking. The amazing part of art is that it eases your mind while it takes you to another dimension in your mind. Kathy Yoon is such a lovely lady who is 27 years old. She transferred from cypress community college to Cal State Long Beach. She is currently a third year. She mentioned how she majored in math before realized that art was her passion. Kathy started talking about her childhood how she was an artistic child because she always loved drawing and playing with Playdo. This played a huge part in her life because it made her realize that ceramics was her strength. Eventually, she focused on that specific area. Tim Burton has been a big influence in her life. He is known for dark and gothic artwork and most importantly he is the writer and producer of Nightmare  Before Christmas. If you connect her artwork and Tim Burton, you can see how her artwork can relate with the main character in the Nightmare Before Christmas. It is very noticeable. In fact, I shared the pictures of her art pieces with my roommates and they fell in love with the artwork. Hence, my roommates love the Nightmare Before Christmas.

Kathy’s art collection is called “So Many Me’s”. The collection is made up of ceramic figures that Kathy refers to as “characters”. I love how each different character is unique. Each ceramic figure reminded me of my roommates. I love how art can remind you of the special friends in your life hence my roommates. Kathy used porcelain clay, white rose paper clay, tissue paper, minimal yarn, and underglaze. In order to create the ceramic figures,Kathy used an essential technique named coiling.Kathy forms long strips of clay into the desired shapes and then she  supports the pieces with stilts. Afterwards, she fires the place pieces to make them harden, or sometimes she puts the piece in an oven. Each piece takes her about 2 to 3 weeks to complete. I admire how Kathy puts her emotions and life experiences into her work. She wants her characters to convey her personality and feelings. She wishes viewers can relate with her artwork. I love how the ceramic figures have a deep meaning. Kathy did an excellent job with her artwork.
